WHAT'S IT WORTH? 2007
Quaker Social Action (QSA) an independent charity working in east London to tackle poverty and social exclusion. Made of Money? Is a family learning project run by QSA that aims to support low-income families to talk, listen and learn about money and its impact on their lives.
Alongside drama coach & community worker Tony Dallas, Flawless Media were approached by Made Of Money? to work with a group of young people, aged between 13 and 16 years old, and help them make a film discussing the issues of branding and consumerism.
It was important to us that the film be representative of the attitudes and values of the young people seen in the film so the young people led the direction of the film, through improvising drama scenes based on their own experiences and opinions. What’s it Worth? is the finished film, and in addition to the drama pieces, also includes documentary footage and interviews with the young people as they explore the issues within their own lives and families.
The film acted as a basis for discussions within this one group of young people, providing an opportunity for them to voice their own concerns about branding and consumerism. In response to this, Made Of Money? are developing a range of resources, such as discussion openers and activities to support the film, which will then go on to provide a template and package for discussions in other schools and community groups nationwide.
Made of Money? was one of 12 successful applicants to the FSA’S Innovation fund from over 350 in 2006/7. Made of Money? is not an affiliate of the FSA and the FSA does not endorse the contents of this film.
